In addition to the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple introduced a new version of the Apple Watch SE in September 2022. This lower-cost version of the Apple Watch is specifically made for those looking for a more affordable, sports-focused watch that has all the essential Apple Watch features at a lower price point.
The second generation Apple Watch SE is almost identical to the Series 6 and does not have the new design introduced with the Series 7. It's also missing some health sensors, and it doesn't include ECG, blood oxygen, or temperature sensors, as these health features require hardware parts that Apple didn't include in the Apple Watch SE to keep costs down.
The most important features at a glance:
- Cheap Apple Watch model.
- available from € 298.75 at Apple .
- Available in 2 sizes, 40 mm and 44 mm.
- Same processor as the Apple Watch Series 8
- Virtually identical to the Apple Watch Series 8
In terms of design and functions, the Apple Watch SE is a combination between the previous generation SE and the Apple Watch Series 8. The Apple Watch SE is available in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes and has the same design as the Apple Watch Series 4 , 5 and 6 models. It has the same S8 SiP dual-core processor found in the Apple Watch Series 8, which hasn't been updated since the Series 6. Still, it offers performance improvements over the original Apple Watch SE, which had an S5 chip.
Design and display of the Apple Watch SE
The design of the second-generation Apple Watch SE is identical to the original Apple Watch SE, with slim screens in 40mm and 44mm sizes to fit a variety of wrists. The first-generation SE was modeled after the Apple Watch Series 6, so it hasn't been updated with the design changes introduced with the Series 7. The Apple Watch SE is 10.7 mm thick and still has the same square design that Apple has used since the Apple Watch came on the market in 2015.
The 40mm models are 40mm high and 34mm wide, while the 44mm models are 44mm high and 38mm wide. The 40mm models weigh 26.4 grams and the 44mm models 32.9 grams. The Apple Watch SE is therefore the lightest Apple Watch that Apple sells.
All Apple Watch SE models are made from 100 percent recycled 7000-series aluminum, which is lightweight, inexpensive, and designed for an active lifestyle. The Apple Watch SE is available in the colors Starlight, Silver and Midnight.
The second-generation Apple Watch SE has a redesigned back made of a nylon composite material instead of ceramic, making it lighter than the previous model. The back contains an optical heart rate sensor to enable the heart rate detection features.
A digital crown on the side of the Apple Watch is available for navigation purposes and there is a button on the side used to call up frequently used apps, access emergency services, confirm Apple Pay purchases, etc.
Water resistance of the Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE models can withstand immersion in water up to 50 meters thanks to seals and adhesives. The speaker, which needs air to produce sound, is the only point of contact and is designed to expel water on its own through sound vibrations after exposure to moisture. It can therefore be used for swimming, but is basically only suitable for shallow water activities and cannot be used for diving, water skiing, showering or any other activity involving high speed water or deep submersion. The warranty on the Apple Watch does not cover water damage, so it is wise to take care when the watch is exposed to water.
S8 Chip
Inside the Apple Watch SE is a dual-core S8 System-in-Package (SiP) chip, which is the same chip Apple used in the Apple Watch Series 8. The S8 chip is up to 20 percent faster than the S5 chip that was in the previous generation Apple Watch SE.
Health features of the Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE offers many of the same health features as the Apple Watch Series 8, but lacks a blood oxygen sensor, temperature measurement, and the ability to measure an EKG. There is an optical heart rate sensor that calculates metrics such as calorie burn, activity level, heart rate and more. A built-in accelerometer and gyroscope enable other important health-related functions, such as fall detection.
The Apple Watch SE can also be worn at night to track your sleep, with Apple providing data on how long you sleep each night. The feature also offers useful tools for a better night's sleep, with details in our Sleep Tracking guide.
Battery life of the Apple Watch SE
The Apple Watch SE offers a battery life of up to 18 hours. For LTE models, Apple assumes four hours of LTE connection and 14 hours of connection to an iPhone. With a new Low Power Mode introduced in watchOS 9, the Apple Watch SE's battery can last up to 36 hours. Low Power Mode disables heart rate notifications, background heart rate readings, Wi-Fi and cellular connections when iPhone is not nearby, and other features to save power.
It takes about 1.5 hours to charge the Apple Watch SE from 0% to 80%, and 2.5 hours to fully charge it from 0%. The Apple Watch SE does not support charging technology like the Apple Watch Series 8.
