Introducing the Apple Watch Ultra
Apple introduced in September 2022 the Apple Watch Ultra, a high-end model of the Apple Watch that has been in development for years. The Apple Watch Ultra is designed to compete with more expensive fitness/sports focused smartwatches and is aimed at sports enthusiasts and athletes who need more battery life and more sport specific performance from their device.
The Apple Watch Ultra is made for endurance, exploration and adventure. With the 49 mm large watch case, it is the largest Apple Watch to date. That's 4mm larger than the 45mm Apple Watch Series 8.
The design of the Apple Watch Ultra has been redesigned compared to the previous Apple Watch Series. Here, the case is made of air and space grade titanium, with a flat sapphire crystal face, a large diameter and deeper grooved digital crown, a housing for the side button and a physical button on the left side (the so-called action button).
Apple Watch Ultra design
The Apple Watch Ultra has been given a new design since the launch of the Apple Watch. The design and housing have been significantly updated. For example, the housing has been extended to the edges of a new flat crystal screen on the front to provide extra protection. In addition, the digital crown and side button now sit in a raised area on the case.
Furthermore, Apple has redesigned the digital crown with a large diameter and coarser design. This makes the digital crown / home button easier to touch even with gloves. An extra 'Action' button has been added to the left side of the Apple Watch Ultra that can be adjusted by the user. The action button has a bright orange color so that it is easy to see and can quickly launch functions such as Workouts and Apps.
The Apple Watch Ultra is made of aviation-grade titanium. This is a lightweight and durable material that is also resistant to use in water. The back of the Apple Watch Ultra is made of ceramic and sapphire glass, just like the Apple Watch Series 8. The Apple Watch Ultra is available in a silver titanium color. There are no other color options available.
Exclusive dial
The Apple Watch Ultra has an exclusive 'Wayfinder' watch face with a time hand that can be turned into a compass with extra space for up to 8 options. The 'Wayfinder' watch face has a built-in night mode that turns the watch face red for better visibility in the dark. Night mode can be activated by turning the digital crown.
Sustainability
Because the Apple Watch Ultra is intended to be used for exploration and adventure, it can withstand extreme temperatures that the standard Apple Watch models. It works at temperatures from -20° C to 55° C. The smartwatch is certified according to MIL-STD-81H standard that is used for military equipment. The display of the Apple Watch Ultra is made of a flat sapphire front glass that is more durable than the Ion-X front glass used for the Apple Watch SE and aluminum Apple Watch Series 8 models. The flat design in combination with the raised edges of the case is meant to protect the display from bumps on the edges.
Water resistant
Apple designed the Apple Watch Ultra for extreme water sports. Unlike standard Apple Watch models, it can be used for kitesurfing, wakeboarding and recreational diving up to 40 meters deep. It is water resistant to 100 meters, making it more resistant to water than other Apple Watch models. The Apple Watch Ultra is also certified to WR100 and EN13319, a standard for diving accessories such as depth gauges.
Battery life of the Apple Watch Ultra
The battery lasts up to 18 hours with normal use or 72 hours in low power mode if you're away from your charger for an extended period of time. This is because the Apple Watch Ultra has a large case and can accommodate a large battery. As an example: the battery of the Apple Watch Ultra is no less than 76% larger than the battery of the Apple Watch 8. The Apple Watch Ultra also supports fast charging technology.
Health features of the Apple Watch Ultra
Blood oxygen
Sensors on the back of the Apple Watch Ultra support blood oxygen monitoring. Blood oxygen saturation is about 95 to 100 percent in a healthy person, and if the percentage of oxygen in the blood drops below that, it may indicate a serious health problem that needs immediate attention. Green, red and infrared LEDs shine light on the blood vessels in the wrist, with photodiodes measuring the amount of light reflected back. Apple's algorithms then calculate the color of the blood, which is an indication of the amount of oxygen present. The Apple Watch Ultra can measure blood oxygen between 70 and 100 percent. Blood oxygen readings can be taken on demand using the Blood Oxygen app, and blood oxygen readings are also taken in the background when the wrist is not moving and when the watch is used for sleep tracking.
ECG (electrocardiogram)
The ECG app uses sensors on the bottom of the Apple Watch and the Digital Crown to create an electrocardiogram. It detects heart rate and rhythm, and can let users know if atrial fibrillation has been detected or if the heart has a normal rhythm. A single ECG, like the Apple Watch, means there are two contact points that measure your heart's electrical sensations. Clinical electrocardiograms taken by the doctor can have six to twelve leads for greater accuracy, but the Apple Watch offers the convenience of taking an EKG anytime, anywhere in about 30 seconds.
Heartbeat
Like all Apple Watch models, the Apple Watch Ultra has a set of optical sensors for measuring heart rate. It is capable of providing irregular heartbeat notifications if atrial fibrillation is detected and can notify users when their resting heart rate is too high or too low. Like the Series 8, the Apple Watch Ultra uses a third-generation optical heart rate sensor.
sleep tracker
The Apple Watch Ultra can be worn at night to track your sleep. It tracks when you're awake and when you're asleep, and lets you know how much time you've spent in REM, Core, and Deep Sleep. It also lets you know how often and for how long you've been awake during the night.
Fall detection
The sensors in the Apple Watch can determine whether you have taken a hard fall and warn emergency services if there is no response. Fall Detection is turned on by default for older adults, but anyone can turn it on in the Apple Watch settings.
Temperature measurement
Apple has added two temperature sensors to the Apple Watch Ultra, including one that measures the temperature at the wrist and one that measures the ambient temperature in the air to limit outside bias. The temperature sensor is used for the Depth app, but it's mainly for women's health. It can take temperature readings every five seconds when the wearer is asleep and aggregate the data into the Health App. Temperature fluctuations can provide data on overall health, but it is also useful for fertility planning. The Apple Watch Ultra can provide retrospective ovulation estimates so they know when they may have ovulated to better track their cycle. According to Apple, temperature measurement will also improve menstrual prediction for those who menstruate.
The activity functions of the Apple Watch Ultra
Like other Apple Watch models, the Apple Watch Ultra tracks movement throughout the day by tracking steps taken, calories burned, and workouts. The Activity App tracks exercises, movement and positions and offers reminders to help people get out and move more often.
Depth App
Apple has created a Depth App for the Apple Watch Ultra that uses a depth gauge when you're underwater. The Depth App can display the time, the current depth, the water temperature (using the temperature sensor of the Apple Watch), the duration of the underwater time and the maximum depth reached.
Compass (new)
Apple has redesigned the Compass app in watchOS 9 specifically for the Apple Watch Ultra. The renewed Compass App has an analog compass that displays a digital representation of the current course and direction. By moving the digital crown, you get a display of the direction, altitude, inclination, latitude and longitude.
The Action button or the Compass Waypoint option can be used to drop a reference point that appears on the Compass face to mark a point of interest. Reference points dynamically update in real time relative to the Apple Watch's position, giving you an idea of the direction of the reference point and its distance.
There's also a new "Backtrack" feature that uses GPS to record a path from where the user has been, so if you get lost or disoriented it's easy to find your way back to where you started.
